9 JANUARY 2017

Welcome back, Everyone!

We trust that everyone had a fantastic holiday and are excited to be coming back to school for 2017! This will be our best year yet!!

There are a few important issues that parents and students need to be aware of:

Administration

For all admin queries please contact Pat de Beer, our new Admin Manager via email. info@galc.co.za

071 672 5953.

Please also ensure that all parents and senior students are on the relevant whatsapp groups for each phase. A lot of important communication is done via this platform. Please also see our website: www.galc.co.za

Please find us on Facebook.

Uniforms – please remember (as per the November Newsletter) that the school badge has changed. There are badges available in the office at a cost of R25.00 per badge. Alternatively, Marelize van Schalkwyk does our school embroidery. Her number is 083 462 6062.

Students must wear denim shorts, plain golf shirts with the school badge and closed takkies.

Girls over the age of 14 may wear natural make up, clear nail polish and discrete jewellery. Boys may not wear earrings. Hair must be tidy at all times.

Students that are not correctly dressed will be sent home.

Our uniform is affordable and comfortable. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Fees

Please note that the 2017 fees have been made available on our website since August 2016. There has been an increase of 10%. Fees are strictly due by the first of each month. Sibling discounts will not apply to late payments. For any account queries, please contact Sofia Roditis via email. accounts@galc.co.za

Sundry invoices are due on presentation. Please note that our contract requires a 3 calendar month notice period, should you wish to deregister your child.

Bus

The bus service has been discontinued due to lack of demand.

Meals and Refreshments

Students are reminded to please provide healthy snacks and refreshments for the day. We do not allow sweets or fizzy cool drinks. The tuck-shop is only available on Friday’s only and is on a strict cash-only basis. No credit will be given. We do have snacks available for purchasing. Suitable drinking water is freely available.

Stationery and Textbooks

Lists were sent out to all parents at the end of last year. Please ensure that your children are all properly prepared at the beginning of the academic year.

These books are available from P N A and other leading bookstores (K & P Lohmiller at Cresta usually stock everything.)

Students are required to provide their own stationary, including an A4 hard cover book and soft cover book per subject, and a ream of paper per term. Photocopies will be charged: Black and White – 20c, Colour – R1.50 per page.

Please put a message on the relevant phase group should you be willing to sell any of last year’s textbooks.

Daily Routine

School starts 07h30 and closes at 16h00. Morning classes will run from 07h30 – 14h15, with 2 break periods.    Afternoon classes will run from 14h30 – 16h00. All afternoon classes are available to full time students at no additional cost.

All classes are organised into set periods with a set time table for given subjects. Timetables will be published at the beginning of the year. Terms will follow the generally accepted South African Private School terms.

We will charge R150 per hour or part there of if you are late in collecting your child.

Safety and Security

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the Centre is situated in a Wildlife reserve and all parents and students are obliged to follow the necessary safety precautions and Glen Afric’s general rules and regulations in this respect. Access to and from the Reserve is controlled and monitored and all vehicles entering and exiting the Reserve associated with the Centre must display the necessary gate passes. All vehicles will be subject to random security checks. The 20km/hour speed limit is strictly enforced.

Student Enrichment Programme

Glen Afric Learning Centre is an Award Unit for the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment. We encourage all students over the age of 14 to participate.

Head Boys and Head Girls

For those of you who unfortunately could not attend our Award’s Evening, we proudly introduce Junior Head Boy, Marcel Zuur and Junior Head Girl, Atlegang Mmola. Our Senior Head Boy is Connor Grant and Senior Head Girl is Carmen Hooper

I am sure that everyone had a wonderful evening at the High School Dance. Thanks again to our Dance Committee, Carmen Hooper, Nicole Anderson and Tibby Gray for all their effort!

Gary and I wish everyone everything of the best for 2017!
